Instructors

Nick Crist

Nick Crist is TRS’ senior instructor.  Along with the director, he is charged with program development, research and acquisition,, and training management.

Nick retired from the US Navy Seabees after 23 years of service. He is a military small arms weapons instructor and stays active teaching or continually updating his knowledge. During his career, he deployed overseas eight times with his last assignment being an nine-month deployment in Bosnia. While in Bosnia, Nick was in charge of unit security and armed convoys for a large detachment, where he logged more than 4,000 miles of tactical convoys with no adverse incidents. Nick previously served for four and a half years on Presidents Reagan’s and Bush’s direct presidential support staff.

Nick has also been a reserve police officer in Southern California for over Ten years. He is an assaulter and sniper with his department’s SWAT Team, and works as the department’s assistant Range Master.

Nick has a wealth of knowledge in small arms, including submachine gun, rifle, shotgun, pistol, and sniper systems. He is a certified FBI and NRA Law Enforcement Firearms instructor, a certified Precision Rifle instructor and a member of the California Range Masters Association.

Jason V. Bunker (No photo available)

GySgt Bunker has an extensive background as a weapons and tactics instructor for Military, Law Enforcement, and Special Security. He has also conducted Asset/VIP Protection training and operations in the CONUS and abroad.  Jason served as a coalition Forces Advisor and Team Leader in Southeast and Southwest Asia, and the Middle East.

Ruben Chavira

Ruben is a veteran street cop with over 23 years of experience.  He is a certified Defensive Tactics / Arrest Control / impact weapons instructor, and a court recognized expert in police defensive tactics and the use of force.  He has been an instructor at the Rio Hondo Police Academy ( in Southern California) as well as numerous Police Departments. He has been studying martial arts for 29 years, with an emphasis in Shorin Ryu/Shotokan.  He has extensive training under Master Robert Koga and is a Koga institute Instructor.    Ruben has attained real-world experience in crowd control, use of impact weapons, weaponless defense, unarmed defense against armed suspects, and close quarter shooting situations. He brings his vast knowledge into the classroom and is a dynamic and detail-oriented instructor.  He is a former United States Marine Sergeant having had tours of duty in the United States as well as overseas, including Japan, where he continued his studies in the martial arts. Ruben runs his own company, ManSizeGuys, Inc., where he trains competitive body builders and consults on fitness and nutrition.

Larry Colshan

Larry is a former United States Marine Sergeant.  His main emphasis was an ammunition and EOD Tech. He was airborne qualified and worked extensively as a crew-served weapons instructor.  He currently works as an executive protection specialist for a major multinational corporation, traveling worldwide. Larry has extensive experience in explosive handling, rappel and fast rope operations, high-performance driving, structure clearing and tactical medicine.  He specializes in executive protection and small arms instruction. Larry stays current working real-life executive protection duties around the world and working with numerous law enforcement agencies throughout the state.

Juan Serrato (No Photo Available)

Juan has been a full-time police officer in Southern California for over twelve years. He is also a US Army Reserve Master Sergeant.  Juan started his police career with the Los Angeles Police Department, where he worked patrol, narcotics, and gang enforcement, ending his career there with the Famed CRASH Unit.  Juan currently works for another Southern California Department and is a member of that department’s SWAT team.

Juan is a Police instructor in many areas, including firearms, tactics, riot control, Active-Shooter/Rapid Deployment, and mobile-field-force tactics.

Juan has been in the Army for almost 17 years. He is Airborne, INTAC, SERE, and Combat Life Saver qualified. He is also a MOUT instructor, a Live-Fire Convoy instructor, a Marksmanship instructor, and a USMC certified HRST Master.

Juan is a graduate of numerous basic and advanced NCO schools and has a B.A. in Political Science from The University of Redlands in California.

During his Army career, Juan has operated on numerous missions in the South East Asia area, including Operation Enduring Freedom.

Juan currently works as a detachment sergeant and also serves as the primary tactics and weapons instructor for his battalion.

Scott Sheldon (No photo available)

Scott has been a paramedic for over 19 years and a paramedic, EMT, and Operational Emergency Medicine Instructor for over 14 years. He is a SWAT paramedic and Search & Rescue Flight paramedic for a Southern California Sheriff Department, and is involved in numerous aspects of medical rescue, including swift water rescue, SCUBA, and mountaineering. He is the president of his own teaching corporation (SERT Group International) and heads and advises us in all aspects of tactical medicine.  Scott is a frequent lecturer and writer and a member of the Special Operations Medical Association and the UDT-SEAL Association. Robert Kummer

For the past 7 years Robert has been a certified law enforcement tactical firearms instructor in the private sector, a firearms instructor for Scientific Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and Defensive Tactics Institute.

His responsibilities as an instructor have been to, develop curriculum and the administration of school operations, field test new equipment, techniques and tactics, write lesson plans and design courses of fire, and coordinate scheduling.

He has trained the United States Marine Corps Provost Marshals Special Reaction Team at Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH) in tactical firearms manipulation and application, trained the U.S. Navy Quick Response Team at Naval Base Ventura County in Special Response Tactics & Techniques, And the Bedford County Sheriffs Dept. and Bedford Police in patrol firearms.

Robert is an active member of International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), American Society for Law Enforcement Training (ASLET), and California Rangemasters Association (CRA). His training is current and on going, he searches out and attends as much advanced training as possible to keep his shooting and teaching / training skills honed. Robert is extremely adept at communicating instruction, recognizing and correcting problem areas, and the accurate expeditious use of tactics and firearms.

Robert’s last mission was with SAIC working on the FAA’s Federal Air Marshal Training Program as a firearms instructor at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) facility in Artesia, New Mexico.

Robert is Currently in the Middle East Theater of Operations (Gulf Region) working for an Intelligence, Operational Analysis and Training Group.

Dan Reeves:

Dan is a shotgun shooting coach, performer, and past “All American” World Champion competitor in the clay target sports. Retired from competition since 1992, Dan was 3-times the captain of TEAM USA in world competition.  He has set, held, and still holds world records for his marksmanship. With his live performances, video instruction, TV and radio appearances (three seasons of ESPN’s Star Shot series, twice on That’s Incredible, and various other cable shooting shows) he has been seen by millions of people all over the world performing his shotgun shooting exhibitions.

Today, Dan is known for his coaching skills with shotgun shooters in the recreational field, competitive arena, and Olympic disciplines.  He is a master at analyzing your individual shooting challenges and making adjustments that improve your shooting ability.

Dan is a combat veteran and understands the tactical environment as well.  His instruction to Law Enforcement and Military reflect what tactical shooters need to enhance their survivability in a life-threatening engagement.

Anthony Burgess: (No Photo Available)

Anthony is a 14 year veteran police officer in Southern California.  He has extensive Patrol experience along with experience in Narcotics, Vice, Surveillance, Protective Services, and Special Investigations. Anthony has seen service with two large tactical teams. One being his department’s main tactical element and the other as a member of a high-risk narcotics entry team. He has planned and participated in over 300 high risk entries.

Anthony is currently a Patrol Field Training Officer and the coordinator of his department’s Reserve Officer Program.  He is also currently a member of his department’s Special Response Team, which deals with high risk incidents, special events, and riots.

Anthony is a California POST certified instructor in many areas. He regularly teaches Firearms, defensive tactics, structure clearing, DUI Investigations, Under the Influence of Narcotics Investigations, and High Risk Vehicle Stops.

Tom Belt: (No Photo Available)

Tom is one of our martial arts and fitness instructors.  He has been studying and teaching martial arts since 1974.  He holds instructor certificates in Jun Fan, Muay Thai, Filipino martial arts, Boxing, Kenpo, Wing Chun Gung Fu, and Ju-jitsu.  Tom spent several years in competition before retiring to teach.

Tom is a full-time fitness instructor and medical orthopedic rehabilitation specialist.  He is the owner of Core Fitness, LLC (A Los Angeles based fitness/rehab company).  Tom also works as a consultant to several gyms and medical offices. He is one of the foremost authorities on fitness and injury prevention as well as injury rehabilitation. His client list includes several celebrities and sports stars.

Leigh Grapenthien:

Leigh is the company photographer and videographer.  Leigh is retired from the aerospace industry and currently works as a police volunteer for a Southern California Police Department.  Photography and videography are among his many tasks there. Leigh is a familiar face at many TRS programs and his contributions are greatly valued by both staff and students.
